Review
SST Records' transition from peerless punk chunk to lysergic stoner rock had been well underway by the time this album appeared. Ironically, however, former Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski had recorded these songs in 1982, long before indie rock fans began grousing about how SST was losing the plot. Not surprisingly, the rumbling "lead bass" style that Dukowski put to such deft, propulsive use on Black Flag's early records is the dominant element here. Like many of their '80s indie rock peers, Wurm dished out grubby hard rock marked by a hit-and-run approach toward melody starring former Dead Hippie singer Simon Smallwood as the weakest link. Depending on your generosity, Smallwood's histrionics suit the genre's confines perfectly, or seem stupefyingly overwrought. For better or worse, though, it's his vocal gyrations that define the melodrama of "Nailed to the Wall," "Should We Be Proud," and "Where Will We Run." His leather-lunged yawp works best on "Padded Cell," the twisted overview of mental illness that appeared on Black Flag's Damaged album. The pickings are pretty slim elsewhere, though the band shows a fair knack for funk on the clattering title track, and "Song for Jimmy" is a decent stab at blues-rock. Of course, no SST album passes without the obligatory studio indulgence -- in this case, the dense, deranged vocal multi-tracking of "Robin Doggin," which should have stayed in the can. Dukowski's resumé aside, this is a footnote album from a footnote band. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, All Music Guide
